Indian women’s hockey team reached the podium after 16 years

Bronze medal after defeating New Zealand 2-1 in penalty shootout

The Indian women’s hockey team won a medal in these games after 16 years by defeating New Zealand in a shootout at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games on Sunday.



India beat New Zealand 2-1 in a penalty shootout in the bronze medal match. Earlier both the teams were tied at 1-1 till the stipulated time. Salima Tete (29th minute) scored the only goal for India. On the other hand, Olivia (59th minute) scored for New Zealand. Sonika and Navneet scored for India in the shootout. After the semi-final loss, the Indian team played an aggressive game in the bronze medal match.

India were beaten 3-0 by Australia in the shootout of the semi-final match, and this match also went into the shootout. New Zealand scored in the first attempt while India failed, adding to the pressure on the team. Leading India here, skipper Savita Poonia stopped New Zealand’s next four attempts, while Sonika and Navneet scored a goal each to seal the win.

India were leading 1-0 in the 58th minute of the match and an arm’s length away from the bronze medal when Lalremsiami got the yellow card leaving only 10 Indian players on the field. Thanks to more players, New Zealand made it to the Indian half. Here the Kiwis first got a penalty corner and then a penalty stroke, using which New Zealand leveled the score at 1-1.
