Hundreds of people took to the streets of Chile on Sunday to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the 1973 coup in which a dictatorship was imposed on the country.

Left-wing parties, with key political figures and members of the government, paid homage to the statue of former President Salvador Allende outside the Presidential Palace.

Participants laid flowers at his monument, as well as at the entrance of the palace where Allende used to enter while president.

Hundreds of demonstrators marched to the monument to those who were detained or disappeared during the dictatorship.

On the outskirts, police and some demonstrators clashed.

According to government figures, during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, at least 3,095 people were killed and tens of thousands more were tortured or jailed for political reasons.
