British Prime Minister Liz Truss admitted, Friday, that her government’s recent announcement of a mini-budget caused “disruption”, but defended the move saying it will help families facing higher winter bills.

“I recognize that has been disruption”, Truss told reporters during an interview at a British Gas Training centre in Dartford.

She said it was important not to raise taxes for families when global economic forces, such as the war in Ukraine, would impact their winter bills.

Bank of England took emergency action Wednesday to stabilize U.K. financial markets and head off a crisis in the broader economy after the government spooked investors with a program of unfunded tax cuts, sending the pound tumbling and the cost of government debt soaring.

Asked about her popularity waning after the move, Truss responded that what was really important to her was to get the British economy back on track and support families and businesses.

She refused, however, to provide a clear answer as to whether people receiving benefits would see them rise in line with inflation in order to help cover the higher costs of living.

Truss responded that this was “something the Work and Pensions Secretary is looking at” but did not elaborate further.
