Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi warned on Tuesday that he will leave his post vacant if chaos and conflict will continue in Iraq between the Iraqi political parties.
In his speech that took place in the prime minister’s office in Baghdad Al-Kadhimi called on the unification of all the Iraqi security forces under the umbrella of the general commander of the armed forces and refused the situation of the “duplicity of the State and the non-State”.
The speech came after two days of escalation between the supporters of the powerful Shiite Cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr and the security forces in the green zone in Baghdad.
Following two days of deadly unrest that sparked fears instability might spread throughout the country and even the region, cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, 48, told his supporters to leave the government quarter where they had rallied.
Within minutes, some could be seen heeding the call, dismantling their tents and walking out of the Green Zone.
At least 30 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the clashes.
Al-Kadhimi said that a committee was formed to find those responsible who opened fire and shot at the demonstrators.
