Indore, Madhya Pradesh – A wave of panic and sorrow swept through Indore late Wednesday night when 24 members of the local transgender community attempted mass suicide, demanding the immediate arrest of two men accused of raping and blackmailing a fellow trans woman in the city’s Nandlalpura area. The harrowing incident unfolded around 8:30 PM, leaving the city’s authorities and residents deeply shaken by the scale and desperation of the protest.
They were demanding justice, but their earlier pleas failed. So, they drank floor cleaning liquid to get attention. The scene became chaotic almost at once. Several of the group fell ill fast. Medics rushed in immediately to help. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the location. All 24 protesters went to Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital. Doctors confirmed they are getting care. Nobody faces immediate danger right now. “None of them is in a critical condition at the moment,” said Dr. Basant Kumar Ningwal. He serves as the Superintendent-in-Charge at MY Hospital.
Speaking to media at the hospital, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anand Kaladgi described the dramatic turn of events: “We received information about a commotion at a house in Nandlalpura where transgender persons reside. Our senior officers arrived promptly and discovered several had consumed an unknown substance. Ambulances were immediately called, and 24 people were admitted. Once their condition stabilizes, we will record their statements and get clearer details on what led them to take such an extreme step,” he said.
DCP Kaladgi added, “The reasons behind the mass consumption of phenyl will be investigated fully. We were also able to convince the crowd to avoid escalation during the hospital commotion. Our officers are in touch with the community, and we are committed to ensuring safety and justice for all.”

According to Neha Kunwar—an influential member of the Nandlalpura transgender community—the trigger for this act was the police’s alleged inaction over a three-month-old rape and extortion case. Kunwar accused two men, identified as Akshay Kumaon and Pankaj Jain, who reportedly masqueraded as journalists, of repeatedly blackmailing, threatening, and ultimately raping a transgender individual in their community. “Even Kinnars are not safe,” Kunwar lamented, “Are we not humans? They also looted ₹1.5 lakh from the victim, but there has been no action for months”.
The case gained renewed attention this week after a formal complaint was filed, reportedly naming both accused and leading to a new First Information Report (FIR). According to Additional DCP Crime Branch Rajesh Dandotiya, both men have now been booked under the Transgender Protection Act and relevant sections for intimidation and rape. “The accused visited the dera in June, threatened the victim with criminal defamation, and one of them raped her. Police have launched a manhunt and further action will follow,” said Dandotiya.
As news of the mass suicide attempt spread, dozens of community members gathered outside the hospital, raising slogans and threatening further drastic action unless the accused were swiftly arrested. For a brief period, tension escalated, with several people reportedly attempting to pour kerosene on themselves in front of the hospital, but police and staff managed to prevent another tragedy.
Wednesday’s events have reignited urgent questions about the safety and dignity of India’s transgender citizens, who still face widespread discrimination, violence, and institutional indifference. City officials are under mounting pressure to not only deliver justice in this specific case but also address the larger issues that drove 24 vulnerable citizens to such a desperate edge.
