Delhi Fire Tragedy: Nine Feared Dead as Blaze Ravages Vivek Vihar Building, Rescue Efforts Underway

At least nine people are dead after a violent fire engulfed a residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar early Sunday morning, police confirmed. The search for more victims is still underway as firefighters doused the blaze after more than five hours.

The fire broke out at 3:47 am inside a multi-story building in the Shahdara sector of Vivek Vihar. Officials say the blaze started when flames caught domestic articles on the second floor, then rapidly spread to six flats across three floors .

Twelve fire tenders rushed to the scene, and 14 were deployed by 5 am. Firefighters rescued around 12–15 people from trapped positions, but found charred bodies on the first floor, second floor, and staircase . One body was recovered from the first floor, five from the second floor, and three from the staircase, a Delhi Fire Services spokesperson said .

Two rescued individuals suffered minor injuries and were immediately taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajendra Prasad Meena . The firefighting operation ran past 8 am before the fire was fully extinguished.

The building’s confusing layout made rescue work far harder than it should have been. Flats were positioned both at the front and back, trapping many residents inside while smoke filled narrow corridors .

Police, the District Disaster Management Authority, traffic officials, and local crews all arrived within minutes after the call came in. The Station House Officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police personally oversaw operations at the scene .

“Further enquiry and proceedings at the spot are in progress,” DCP Meena said, confirming that investigators are now determining exactly how the fire started .

What This Really Means For You

If you live in older Delhi neighborhoods with multi-story residential buildings, this tragedy is a stark warning. Many of these structures lack fire escapes, have blocked exits, or mix commercial and residential spaces—exactly the kind of setup that lets fires spread fast. Check your own building: Are fire extinguishers present? Are exits clear? Could smoke trap you at night? Your family’s safety depends on these details, not on promises.

The Bottom Line

Nine lives lost before sunrise in one of Delhi’s crowded pockets—this could have been anyone’s neighbor, anyone’s family. Fire safety isn’t optional; it’s the difference between survival and tragedy.
