National Boys’ and Girls’ Club Day for Kids was created by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which works to enable “all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” The organization was established in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut by Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, and Elizabeth
Hammersley to provide a positive alternative for character development for young boys roaming the streets. They were focused on improving the boys’ behavior and helping them build up their expectations and goals. By 1906, several similar clubs had affiliated themselves with the Club, creating a nationwide movement. The Boys Club of America received a Congressional Charter in 1956.
In 1990, the Club broadened its scope to include girls as well. The organization’s name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and its charter was amended and renewed by Congress.
