India is doing a big thing to protect its nature by starting the National Red List Assessment (NRLA). Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh showed it off at a big conservation meeting in Abu Dhabi. The plan is to get the facts straight on which species are in danger of disappearing across the country – about 11,000 of them. That’s around 7,000 kinds of plants and 4,000 kinds of animals, all over India, from the Himalayas to the Western Ghats and other spots with tons of different lives.
India’s Rich Biodiversity and Global Significance
India might be small in land size (only 2.4% of the world), but it has almost 8% of all the plants and 7.5% of all the animals found worldwide. A lot of them (28% of plants and over 30% of animals) are only found in India. The National Red List Assessment is designed to align with global standards set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and fulfill India’s commitments under international biodiversity agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Collaborative Effort for Conservation
The project is a team effort run by India’s Environment Ministry, with the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) in charge. They’re bringing together people who study plants and animals, conservation experts, and other pros to be sure they know exactly what species they’re talking about and to make solid plans to protect them. By 2030, they want to put out detailed National Red Data Books for plants and animals, making a system that uses science to watch and protect species that are at risk.
Importance of Scientific Documentation
Kirti Vardhan Singh said that getting the facts straight with the Red List is a must for knowing what to save first, making good rules, and using resources the right way. This new plan will help India focus its conservation work better, make rules that protect plants and animals that are in danger, and deal with threats to nature.
A Timely Commitment Amid Global Biodiversity Decline
This project comes at a good time because animals all over the world have dropped in numbers by about 73% since 1970. Almost 40% of plant types could disappear because they’re losing their homes, forests are being cut down, and other stuff people do is harming them. India’s Red List will be a big help in dealing with these problems here and will add to saving nature around the world.
Strengthening Legal Protections and Preserving Traditional Knowledge
Besides making the rules stronger under India’s Wildlife Protection Act, which was changed recently to include species from CITES, the project also says it’s important to write down old knowledge about saving nature. India has a lot of sea life, too – over 20,000 Marine species – which shows how much there is to do to protect it all.
A Vision for the Future
India wants to set up a way to check on species across the country that everyone can use. This will not only protect what it has in nature but will also give important info to help with planning and fixing problems. This is a big step in India’s ongoing work to save its amazing nature for the future.
This big National Red List Assessment shows that India is a leader among the world’s 17 countries with the most different life and proves that it’s serious about making a future that’s good for nature.
