Let’s begin with the discovery of Dominica. Christopher Columbus stumbled upon the island of Hispaniola before reaching America on November 3, 1493. Since it was a Sunday, he named this piece of land after the Latin phrase ‘Dies Dominica,’ which means the ‘Lord’s day.’
It was one of the first Caribbean countries to be put on the world map. Owing to the Italian explorer’s discovery, trade routes between Europe and the Americas (an ancient name for the collective landmass of North and South America) sprouted. Europeans had a penchant for colonization back then, so the same was done to Dominica. Spain was not much interested in the pursuit, so France took it up.
