A Shillong court granted bail on Monday to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the brutal murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The Additional DC (Judicial) Dashalene R Kharbteng ordered her release on a ₹50,000 bail bond after finding police failed to effectively communicate the grounds of her arrest.

Sonam was arrested in May 2025 along with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and three others for allegedly plotting Raja’s murder. The couple had married in May 2025 and traveled from Indore to Shillong for their honeymoon, but Raja went missing days later.

His body was discovered on June 2, 2025, in a gorge at Cherrapunjee’s Sohra, shocking the nation. This was Sonam’s fourth bail appeal in the case after three previous rejections.

The court found that police violated Article 22(1) of the Constitution by not providing her with the grounds of arrest at the time of detention. “Sufficient knowledge of facts constituting grounds of arrest has not been effectively communicated to the petitioner in clear terms,” Judge DR Kharbteng wrote in the April 27 order.

Additionally, Sonam had no legal representation when first produced before the court in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9, 2025. Her lawyer argued she cannot face indefinite pre-conviction detention without a trial, especially with the investigation already complete and chargesheet filed.

The prosecution opposed bail, claiming the plea was belated since charges had already been framed. They argued the arrest memo was duly signed by Sonam and witnesses.

Immediately after the order, Raja’s family announced plans to move a higher court to cancel the bail. His brother Vipin Raghuvanshi and mother Uma Raghuvanshi expressed anguish, alleging injustice.

Sonam must remain in Shillong and appear before the court during all hearings, per the bail conditions. Her father and cousin arrived in Shillong to provide the surety bond, with her release expected by evening.

Police stated investigations will continue despite the bail. “Necessary legal procedures are being followed and the police will continue to pursue the matter as per law,” said SP Vivek Syiem.
