National Neighbor Day – September 28, 2022, history significance why we celebrate timeline fact’s

Want to be the favorite person on your block? National Neighbor Day celebrates the importance of being a good neighbor while contributing to one’s community and each other. Relationships with neighbors can often lead to close friendships. Neighbors are almost like family. They’re close to you in more ways than one. That’s why National Neighbor Day, held annually on September 28, promotes good relationships between neighbors. As Mister Rogers would say, “Please won’t you be…my neighbor?”

History of National Good Neighbor Day

National Good Neighbor Day was created by Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana in the early 1970s. It was commemorated on the fourth Sunday of every September annually. Following it, President Jimmy Carter on September 22, 1978, had signed the Proclamation 4601 establishing September 24, 1978, as the National Good Neighbor Day.

The proclamation stated that the day should be observed with appropriate ceremonies and activities. Later in 2003, the Senate had passed a resolution by Montana Senator Max Baucus to choose September 28 as National Good Neighbor Day.

Becky Mattson had created this day as a way to encourage the neighbors to be good to each other. Neighbors are those who live nearby, usually in a house or in an apartment that is next door or across the same street. Some neighbors soon become friends and lend them help and stand as support during emergency situations. Neighbors if are found to be good neighbors then, a day of celebrating these neighbors will be a form of tribute.
