History of National Kale Day
Because of its leafy, green texture, many people might believe that kale is a part of the lettuce family. But, actually, it is a cruciferous vegetable, making it more closely related to broccoli and cauliflower. A superfood that started becoming popular in the 2010s, kale offers a variety of compounds that are so good for the body!
Containing tons of nutrients such as Vitamins B, C and K, as well as potassium, calcium and zinc, kale is certainly a vegetable that’s worth celebrating on National Kale Day – and perhaps every day!
Founded by a chef and a doctor, National Kale Day recognizes the enormous health benefits of kale and how it can be used to make delicious and nutritious meals. Chef Jennifer Iserloh and Dr. Drew Ramsey established the day through a Change.org petition.
Dr. Ramsey is also the author of the book 50 Shades of Kale. In the book, Ramsey states, “if we all ate more kale, we could save the planet”. Packed with nutrients, economical and versatile, this cruciferous and leafy dark green vegetable has plenty to love.
